Seeing as this is an internet message board, I assume some of you have a reasonable knowlegde of how these machines work.. Im looking to buy a new PC, and after a disheartening visit to PC world, I thought Id ask here....

Mostly use the machine for Internet (Duh..) however will also be storing and playing MP3s, and streaming videos, and probably burning discs, and some occassional 3D gaming. Im hoping to spend up to £400, and Im after some advice, as PC world were pretty useless... (showed me a £300 and a £800 macine but didnt know the difference)

Go onto Dell website. They build the machine according to the spec that you require and will deliver it to your door .

All you need is a cd burner. most of them now are dvd burners now. 48X speed is good. If you want to save your games to the hard drive, then you will need alot of memory and alot of speed but that comes at a price. however if you want to play the games from the cd, then a good graphics card will be suffice. For games and music, a good set of speakers is essential. If you want to get wireless broadband separately, then you don't need to get an internal modem, which will bring down the cost as well.

I would also buy a magazine or two, pc advisor, computer shopper, something like that. They help you make an informed choice. When you have decided what spec you want each of the components to be then shop around on the net. Dell are very good but when I shopped around a bit I found a better spec and a better price. Also, a good tip is if you see a particular computer you like then type it into google and you will get a price comparison. I saved about 400 quid doing this with my new laptop.
Also, don't rush it, I usually buy impulsively but I took a few days and it was worth it as I saved money. If you like you can sendme a link for anything you're thinking of getting and I'll help you seeing if it can be got cheeper anywhere.
Try these links.

Finally, as advice to everyone...DO NOT BUY AT PC WORLD!! They suck so badly it's not true

Hope this helps, have fun

Just to sow doubts........one thing I was told about Dell is that the machines are assembled in lots of different locations to widely differing quality standards, so there is an element of unreliability.

I've got a Tosh laptop which is big (not really portable) and very reliable, and a smaller Packard Bell which was about £ 599 back in June and packs a lot of punch - good value.

I've always shopped at PCWorld and backed myself to spot a bargain from what's in the shop on the day. Their adverts bear no resemblance to what's in stock.

I got my last PC from Ebay following some internet research into what would cover my needs, best thing about the deal I got was the fact I wasn't paying for printers, monitors and software that I already had.

When i was in University in Cork studying Computer Applications, all the IT labs had dell computers. Now Im working in a Dutch bank, we all use Dell PCs here. Their reliablility needs to be pretty high and is.

The settings have to be set based on the area where the customer is from. I bought a Siemens laptop that cost me an arm a leg and a head, and its shite! I needed alot in the spec of my laptop for college work, but it went back to the factory ( Belfast ) 3 times before they agreed to renew the full thing.

IT audit manager at the company confirmed that to me today. The office where I am working at the moment is using Dells, and they are nice looking machines, but there is a risk.

He recommended HP as the best mix of quality/ value and IBM and Sony as the premium products.

Well as a comparison, in two minutes I found this:

The downside is that it is being offered by Mesh who's machines are cheap and cheerful but not very well built. I wouldn't recommend them for business but for a cheap run around so to speak they are good value. The one below also includes a 19" flat panel too.

I would say that's pretty good, AThlon is better processor and having MS office also saves a bit of cash. Had a quick browse but can't find anything better. Who is it from? Do you have a model name?

As I say, it took two minutes to find that machine, i'm sure you could find a cheaper, better specced and built machine if you really looked around. You could try the likes of eBuyer etc, they often have some really good deals.

With regards to Mesh specifically, I have little experience with them myself and I have never bought a machine from them as I would/have built my own, however the people I know that have, I think have been pretty happy with what they've got for their dough. The other company who are very much the main competitor to mesh are Evesham so if you are thinking of going down that route then take a look at them too and compare.

Thanks very much Ben, i have been looking around online but getting slightly confused by the numbers... I always thought I was quite PC literate but the industry has moved faster than i have! Im sure I will easily find a machine that excels my needs - but its just about getting the best for the money!

That one doesn't have proper MSoffice which will set you back up to 200 notes. What do you use?
As for processors, Athlon is better as far as I know but it depends what you using it for. If you are just running office applications then other would be fine I imagine. Dual core is good.

You need a dedicated graphics card as opposed to part of the motherboard. This is the sort of thing that hikes up the cost of a system cos a decent one costs 200 +

Most have gfx card, usually ATI or nvidia.

May be worth using pcworld or currys to try before u buy to see what gfx acceleration is like on similar machines...then walk away to 'think about it'

I also was introduced to AVG instead of norton & macfee anti virues and firewall for me it`s a 100 times better.

I hope you find one that suits your needs cheers Chas

I bet you were all gutted.

I don't trust Dell because they are European and sponsored by the euro governments (well at least the french). Smells fishy to me). I am sick of Euro clap trap about quality when it is just rubbish. Airbus, Ariane, fighter planes and helicopters you name it it all ends up costing 10x more than promised. Even Kiwis and grape juice gets adverts on the TV paid for by the CEE and we get feed nonsense like kiwis contain more vitamin C than Oranges, bum wash, does it matter if your just going to piss it away anyway? :redhot:
