Here’s a nice story I read today in Tourism Business Review.
During the 2005 Lions tour a group of Welsh supporters arrived in Christchurch with no accommodation and no match tickets. Williment Travel, NZ’s largest sports Tours company tried to get them a couple of rooms but Christchurch was fully booked out. They managed to find accommodation at a pub in Timaru, 2 hours drive south of Christchurch. At the last minute they even managed to find the group match tickets to the test and a bus from Timaru to Christchurch. The group turned them down! “Thanks, but the publican here is fantastic, he even put welsh beer on tap for us, and the locals are great fun, we’re staying here to watch the game” ![]() Awesome.

Thats the welsh for you. Pub? or sitting on a bus for 2 hours? Easy choice.

On the other hand, the inhabitants of Neath and Llanelly are typically Welsh, and these are the only two Rugby towns of any size where the typical Welsh Rugby supporters may be found, and it is in a match between Neath and Llanelly that one gets an atmosphere more nearly approaching the atmosphere of an international match.
